You know that I love celebrating Halloween, and this year, I wanted to combine my “spooky” printed fabrics with a slightly more country style. So, I thought: what's better than a Sun Bonnet Sue!?

I made a series of three Sun Bonnet Sues (with a fourth, more customized one that stands out from the rest) using typical Halloween fabrics with softer prints in a more country style. In addition, I added beads, ribbons and sequins for extra texture and to make them glitter in candlelight.

The sparkly threads are from Wonderfil and I used the GlaMore and Dazzle ranges. I keep adding new materials to my projects and the experimentation is doing me good!

I didn't want to make a full quilt, so I made each Sun Bonnet Sue separately, using hand appliqué, so that I could combine them into vignettes later to decorate my home during Halloween and fall. I could frame them later if I wish.

The fabrics come from the “Nightshade Déjà Vu” collection by Tula Pink for Free Spirit Fabrics, the “Kismet” collection by Sharon Holland for Art Gallery Fabrics, as well as my personal collection of vintage fabrics.

There are several available Sun Bonnet Sue templates; I used a free version that I found on the Missouri Star Quilt Company website.
