Witch’s Hat Placemat Take Two
We couldn’t resist making a second version of our Witch’s Hat placemat pattern. This time we used two prints from the Spooky ‘n Sweeter collection by Art Gallery Fabrics, both of which are available in the shop.
Our first version was made with traditional quilting weight cotton, but this version is made in a poplin cotton, so the hand of the fabric feels a little silkier. Both types of cotton worked well for this pattern.
No matter what type of fabric you choose, just be careful not to stretch the Half Rectangle Triangles when handling the pieces that make up the hat of the witch’s hat. When working with any fabrics on the bias grain, rather than the straight grain, we have to be extra careful when pressing and handling to avoid stretching them out.
We quilted this version by hand, like last time, but this time we decided to outline the patterns printed on the fabric. We chose a slightly shiny orange thread, and worked around some of the flowers and spiderwebs in the background fabric. Then, we created little crosses, sashiko-style, over the stars in the central orange fabric.
This project is done for now, but perhaps some sparkly beads or sequins would look great here too? What do you think? More embellishment??
